Participating in a study abroad program can be expensive, especially if your home university scholarships aren’t able to be used. To help with the expenses of both the program and travel, I have put together this list of some of the most popular study abroad scholarships out there right now.
All of these Scholarships have different requirements so just be sure to apply for the ones that best fit you.
Don’t forget to also check with your home university, as well as the actual program you are applying to, as they can have their own study abroad scholarships for just their students!
Scholarship Search Databases
UNIGO
This is a great search engine that showcases over 3.6 million scholarships worth over $14 Billion. Not only do they promote outside scholarships, they have their own worth anywhere from $1,500-$10,000 each. All deadlines are posted throughout the calendar year depending on the one that you apply for.

Just like UNIGO, this is a great search engine for international scholarships. These scholarships tend to focus on students from developing countries but there are also plenty available to all international students.

Study Abroad Funding
This website provides information for all different types of study abroad scholarships/programs. They offer scholarships in 5 different categories up to $2,000 per student. I highly recommend looking at this website, there are hundreds of different scholarships that apply to students of all backgrounds.

There are so many great scholarships on this website for students all around the world! Not only do they offer study abroad scholarships, they also have scholarships for seniors in high school and regular undergraduate students. Some are restricted to U.S. citizens but not all!

This website is full of scholarships opportunities for some of the most popular study abroad destinations. They are open to all students with a verity of scholarships amounts.

The College Board helps to support over 7 million students each year and offers financial aid/scholarships to over 2,000 programs!

General Study Abroad Scholarships
Boren Awards
The Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students who study abroad in parts of the world that are considered critical to United States interests, represent numerous backgrounds, and share an interest in languages. There are twelve sections to the application, and once submitted, students should notify their assigned representative that their application is completed.
Degree Level: Undergrad/Bachelors
Awards: $8,000 (summer programs, STEM students only
$10,000 (semester programs)
$20,000 (academic year programs)
Requirements: Must be enrolled in a higher education institution

Rotary Foundations & Clubs
Rotary clubs around the states offer many scholarships secondary, undergraduate, and graduate students. They are given out by individual clubs, but current members/family are not eligible. To apply for this scholarship, contact your local rotary club for more information.

Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarships
This scholarship is open to all U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or students currently in the US on a student visa. You must be a full-undergraduate student who has applied or been accepted into a study abroad program. They also have a gap year scholarship with Travel Access Project. This provides grants for gap year travel to anyone from any country of any age and is valued at $3,000.

Graduate Level Scholarships
Churchill Foundation Scholarship
The Churchill Foundation Scholarship is perfect for those interested in earning a master’s degree in mathematics, science, or engineering. Depending on the academic program, the foundation covers academic expenses for 9-12 months.
Level: Graduate Students
Requirements: Must currently be an undergrad senior at a participating university

The BEST (BUNAC) Scholarship (graduate students)
If you are from the UK, this scholarship is for you! The BEST Scholarship grants many awards to students from the UK to begin post-graduate studies in North America. Based on your area of study, there are different awards you are able to apply for.
Level: Graduate Students
Award: $5,000-$15,000
Requirements: Must be a UK student and UK passport holder who has applied (but not started) graduate school in the U.S. or Canada

MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship (graduate students)
One overall $5,000 scholarship is awarded, plus four additional $3,000 scholarships to one student from each geographic area: Africa, Latin America/Caribbean, India, and Asia.

Requirements: Must be an international student that has either been accepted or is currently enrolled in a full-time program in the U.S. or Canada.

American Association of University Women Funding $ Awards (graduate students)
The AAUW grants women pursuing a variety of graduate academic degrees anywhere from $2,000-$35,000. These grants are given to students who are interested in pursuing topics that cover community development, international projects, and career development. These funds can be used for approved study abroad programs listed on the AAUW application.

Travel Scholarships
Hostelling International USA Explore the World Travel Scholarship
In 2019, Hostel International USA offered over 100 -$2,000 scholarships! Each one of them could be used for travel programs that have a focus on education or service. These scholarships are open to ALL students so I recommending looking into the ones that they offer.

Award: $2,000
Requirements: U.S. Citizen receiving Pell Grant, aged 18-30

Scotts Cheap Flights Scholarship
Twice a year, Scotts Cheap Flights offers a $1,000 to students studying abroad to help with travel expenses. This is a great scholarship to apply for to help pay for flights.

This is one of the best search engines for international students looking for scholarships. Not only do they offer scholarships, but they have programs for Fulbright, post doctoral and merit scholarships.
