Semester at Sea FAQ Part 4
Semester at Sea FAQ Part 4
Q: How much money did you actually spend?
A: I get this question all the time, and I understand why because I had the same question before my voyage. If you want to see a full breakdown of every single penny I spent on SAS click HERE!
Q: When should I start saving for SAS?
A: You should start saving for SAS as soon as you know you want to go on a voyage. Since this program is pretty pricy, the more time you have to save, the better off you will be in the long run. How you decide to save though is totally your call. Personally, taking a portion of my paycheck every week and putting it in a separate place specifically for SAS worked best.
Q: What is the ratio between Gap year, undergrad and postgrad voyagers?
A: Majority of the voyagers re undergraduate students (probably 80%). There are Gap year and postgrad voyagers but definitely not nearly as many as undergrad.
Q: Does your university have to be affiliated with SAS to participate?
A: No! This was something that I was concerned about also since my home university is not affiliated with SAS. If your home university is not affiliated, you will have to go through a little more paperwork but it’s doable. As long as your university accepts the program, you are good to go!
Q: Does your university have to approve the classes you take on the ship?
A: This all depends on the school that you go to. For me, since my school was not affiliated, I had to get all my classes pre-approved before I was able to register. By getting them pre-approved, it assured me that all the credits would transfer back to my home university and go towards my major.
Q: How are credits transferred back to your home university?
A: At the end of every voyage SAS will send your home university an official transcript. The price for this is included in your tuition price so you will not have to pay extra. Once your home university receives the official transcript, you will receive credit for the classes if they were approved (refer to question above).
Q: How long does the application process take?
A: After you summit the application, it normally takes about 2-5 days to get your acceptance. The application is super easy and can be done in about an hour. Click HERE to apply!
Q: If you could do SAS again would you and would you do anything different?
A: Yes and yes! I would do SAS again in a heartbeat (there maybe another voyage for me in the near future..) but I would also do a few things different. Stay tuned for a separate post all about this!

Hello! First of all, I just want to say that I absolutely love your blog. It’s answered a lot of my questions. I’ve been accepted to the spring 2022 voyage and I was wondering, do people travel independently after SAS is over? Thank you so much!

Congratulations!! I’m Glad you found this page helpful!
There are many people who decide to travel independently/with their friends after the voyage ends. I would say that more people travel after the spring voyage rather than the fall voyage since they do not have to be home for the holidays/the spring semester. Not everyone does though so don’t feel like you must!
